UHW on Building Bridges Radio: "Let the members decide"
April 21st, 2008UHW President Sal Rosselli and Executive Board member Stan Lyles, a rank-and-file leader from Northridge Hospital Medical Center, recently appeared on “Building Bridges,” a labor-oriented radio program on WBAI 99.5 FM in New York City. The discussion centered around our drive to restore democracy to SEIU’s decision-making process so that workers can advocate for themselves and the patients they care for. Host Ken Nash tried to get Andy Stern to appear on the program and talk about why SEIU is becoming less democratic under his leadership, but Stern would not participate.
“The rank-and-file members want to have a say in every aspect of the union. We’re the ones that are doing the work. The dispute is not between Sal Rosselli and Andy Stern. The dispute would be between the concept of what Andy Stern wants to do, and the membership saying no, that’s not what we want.

“We don’t care where the good ideas come from. The International may have some of the best ideas in the world. We say, fine—bring them back to the members and let the members decide if this is what they want or not. That’s all we ask. Let the members have their say on their destiny.”
