About
Fighting for Democracy: In Labor and BeyondThere is a struggle raging in SEIU about what kind of union we need to be to succeed in revitalizing the labor movement. Should our movement be one where workers themselves make decisions or one where most decisions are controlled by a handful of leaders in Washington D.C.? What’s the most effective way to build a strong labor movement that changes the lives of members and contributes to building a progressive majority?
This website was created by members of SEIU United Healthcare Workers West (UHW). In UHW, the fastest growing local union in SEIU, democracy is the cornerstone of our success. But today some DC-based leaders of SEIU, our national affiliate, are trying to restrict our members’ democratic process and attack those who speak openly and honestly about these issues.
Everyday, netroots activists inspire millions to engage in vigorous debate and to participate in bottom-up collective action to change national and global politics. We in UHW believe that the labor movement needs the same grassroots activism and healthy debate.
See for yourself. That’s why this website www.seiuvoice.org exists: to have a place to learn more about this vital fight for democracy in SEIU, the labor movement and beyond.
